Dr. Astley Smith BSc., MSc., DMD
Dr. Astley E. Smith attended the University of Manitoba where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc.) in Chemistry, a Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry and a Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree (DMD).
In 2004 Dr. Smith developed a patient-specific procedure for autologous thrombin activation of platelets in platelet rich plasma (PRP). In 2005 he developed a second procedure for allogenic thrombin activation of platelets. In 2007 he developed a third procedure for the production of highly concentrated platelets at 23x baseline (PRP23x). His research is conducted at the Centre for Blood Research at the University of British Columbia School of Medicine, Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Dr. Smith has extensive experience in bone grafting enhancement using autogenic growth factors in his private practice and his developments were published in the Journal of Oral Health, May 2006 and December 2006. In 2007, he was the first to use platelet concentrate at 23x baseline (PRP23x) to induce 100% Vital New Bone in a patient's maxillary sinus floor, and he made an award winning presentation on the topic at the I.C.O.I implant meeting in Las Vegas, in February 2008. Dr. Smith is Founder and President of Global Autografting Inc. with headquarters in Metro Vancouver, B.C. He is a graduate of the Pacific Implant Institute. He has earned titles of Fellow, Mastership and Diplomate of the American Dental Implant Association (FADIA, MADIA, DADIA), and a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI). Dr. Smith recently completed the "Power Series" with Implant Seminars with lectures from Dr. Robert Marx, Dr. Pat Allen, Dr. Peter Moy, Dr. Arun Garg, Dr. Shadi Daher and Dr. Myron Nevins. He has been in private practice for over 25 years in New Westminster, Metro Vancouver, B.C., and he resides in Vancouver, B.C. Canada with his wife Betty and his two sons Michael and Stephen. Dr. Smith has made presentations with positive reviews in the USA and Canada.
Dr. Smith is a former diplomat who represented Jamaica as Honorary Consul and Honorary Consul General in Vancouver, B.C. Canada for 12 years.
